I will walk the blind by an unknown way and guide them on paths they’ve never traveled. I will smooth their difficult road and make their dark mysteries bright with light. These are things I will do for them, for I will never abandon My beloved ones. Isaiah 42:16

And after Moses, Yahweh’s servant, died, Yahweh spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ faithful assistant, and said, “My servant Moses is dead. Now get up! Prepare to cross the Jordan River, you and all the people. Lead them into the land that I am giving to the Israelites. Every part of the land where you march I will give you, as I promised Moses. Joshua 1:1-3

In the third chapter of Joshua we find Joshua and the Israelites making their way to the Jordan River. After forty years in the desert they are finally going to cross over into their promise land. But before there can be a crossing over there must be a preparation.

We see several things that Joshua and the leaders did and told the people to do to prepare themselves. We are at a time where it is critical that we prepare and position ourselves for what the Lord is doing, so that we will be ready to cross over into our promise land.

Set yourselves apart: Joshua instructed the people, “Get yourselves ready! Set yourselves apart for Yahweh!” Joshua 3:5 TPT The Amplified bible says to “sanctify” yourselves, and the Message bible says to “purify” yourself.

Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Conform means to become similar in form, nature, or character, fit in, yield, adjust, adapt, comply, obey, fall in with, follow the crowd.

We could say that conformity is “being normal”, so that we change according to what our environment is, kind of like a chameleon. But God is calling us to be different, to stand up and stand out in a world that is full of confusion and disorder.

Beloved ones, with promises like these, and because of our deepest respect and worship of God, we must remove everything from our lives that contaminates body and spirit, and continue to complete the development of holiness within us. 2 Corinthians 7:1

First fruits: Joshua was up bright and early the next morning. Joshua 3:1

Give God your first and your best. Don’t fill your day with other things, hoping that you will have time to spend with the Lord at the end of the day. Set aside time with the Lord daily and guard it! It is your “cool of the day”, your time of refreshing and renewing.

Come close and listen: Joshua told the Israelites, “Come close and listen to the words of Yahweh your God.” Joshua 3:9

There’s a private place reserved for the lovers of God where they sit near Him and receive the revelation-secrets of His promise. Psalm 25:14 This is the place of worship and fellowship with the Lord, a place where we hear and know His heart. This place is so incredibly intimate, sacred and holy so Do not be in a hurry to get out of the presence. Ecclesiastes 8:3

Stay in God’s Word: Recite this scroll of the law constantly. Contemplate it day and night and be careful to follow every word it contains; then you will enjoy incredible prosperity and success. Joshua 1:8

God’s perfect Word is so crucial to our lives and wellbeing, spiritually, emotionally and physically; it revives our souls! His laws lead us to truth, and His ways change the simple into wise. His teachings make us joyful and radiate His light; His precepts are so pure! His commands, how they challenge us to keep close to His heart! The revelation-light of His word makes my spirit shine radiant. They warn us, His servants, and keep us from following the wicked way. Psalm 19:7-8,11.

The rarest treasures of life are found in His truth. That’s why I prize God’s Word like others prize the finest gold. Nothing brings the soul such sweetness as seeking His living words. Psalm 19:10

Be still and wait: Joshua led the Israelites from Acacia to the eastern bank of the Jordan. There they set up camp and waited. Joshua 3:1

Waiting is not passive, but an active preparation for what the Lord is about to do, fully cooperating with the Lord in how He is directing you, moment by moment.

I waited and waited and waited some more, patiently, knowing God would come through for me. Psalm 40:1 The word “knowing” in this scripture indicates a confidence that while we wait, we can be assured that God will indeed come through for us.

Stay alert and watchful: After three days, the leaders of the people went throughout the camp giving orders to the people, “Watch for the priests of the tribe of Levi to lift the Ark of the Covenant of Yahweh your God. When it starts moving, follow it so you’ll know which way to go, since you’ve never marched this way before.” Joshua 3:2-4

It was the spiritual leaders that lifted the Ark up, but the people were not following the priests, it was the Ark of the Covenant that they were to keep their eyes on and follow. The Ark is a beautiful picture of Jesus, our High Priests, His Presence and His mercy. We are to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, “do not turn to the right or the left”. Proverbs 4:27 Jesus is our “Shepherd going before us, leading us forward, forever carrying us in His arms! Psalm 28:9 For your God, Yahweh, will go before you, He will lead you each step and be your rear guard. Isaiah 52:12

Have faith and be faithful: “Joshua, no one will be able to defeat you for the rest of your life! I will be with you as I was with Moses, and I will never fail nor abandon you. You must be strong and brave.”  Joshua 1:5-6

Our Father is bigger and better than we can imagine. When we are “still and know that He is God” Psalm 46:10 and that His plans towards us truly are good, then we can rest assured that He will never leave us or forsake us.

Let us hold fast our confession (of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior). Hebrews 4:14 As we stand steadfast He will empower us and lead us to victory. “You must remain very strong and courageous! Be faithful to obey all the teaching that my servant Moses commanded you to follow. Do not deviate from him to the right or to the left, so that you will have overwhelming success in everything you undertake.” Joshua 1:7

Stand firm and Trust God’s timing: Now the priests stood firmly on dry ground in the riverbed with the ark on the shoulders.  Joshua 3:17

Cling to the promises of God without demanding a time frame for the promise to be fulfilled, for There are many of God’s people that have hoped and waited for the promises of God to be fulfilled, however, The Lord isn’t really being slow about His promise, as some people think. No, He is being patient for your sake. 2 Peter 3:9

I am Yahweh, and when the right time comes, I will accomplish it swiftly! Isaiah 60:22

Be obedient: The very moment the priests with the Ark dipped their feet in the river’s edge, the water coming downstream toward them stopped flowing and piled up in a solid wall as far upstream as Adam, a place near Zarethan.  Joshua 3:15

The priests were instructed to step into a river that was at flood stage. The Lord didn’t dry the river up first because He wanted them to take that first step of obedience. As the Lord directs our steps, even when things look uncertain, it’s important to be obedient. The scripture says that the very moment they dipped their feet in the river’s edge, it stopped flowing! The entire nation passed by the Ark as they completed their miracle-crossing on dry ground. Joshua 3:16-17

Sometimes God tells us to “be still”, and other times He tells us to “advance”.  As we prepare ourselves, the Lord is faithful and true to guide and direct us. When you turn to the right or turn to the left, you will hear His voice behind you to guide you, saying, “This is the right path; follow it.” Isaiah 30:21

Advance: As you advance into the land, He will drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites. Joshua 3:10

As we advance He parts the way, hedging us behind and before, driving out before us the giants of the land.

We are at the riverbank of the Jordan . . . waiting. The waters are troubled and raging, but still we wait. But we wait with great expectancy and confidence, keeping our eyes on Jesus and preparing our hearts, following the presence of the Lord as He draws us and guides us into the “new” place that we have never been before.

God’s promise to Joshua is also for us today, “Be strong and brave! Do not yield to fear nor be discouraged, for I am Yahweh your God, and I will be with you wherever you go! Joshua 1:9 In the coming days, “many will see His miracles; they’ll stand in awe of God and fall in love with Him!” Psalm 40:3

So then, prepare your hearts and minds for action! Stay alert and fix your hope firmly on the marvelous grace that is coming to you. For when Jesus Christ unveiled, a greater measure of grace will be released to you. 1 Peter 1:13
